The Preschool Program is designed to help the young children take all the information they have absorbed from birth to 3 years old and now categorize, organize and play with it. They are very tactile at this age and want to explore all concrete objects and textures.
Our program here at Great Mystery Montessori is to allow the child to follow their natural flow of exploration, along with helping them learn concepts that while simple to us are very challenging to young children. They will see colors and shapes and begin to put puzzle pieces together, learn spatial concepts and so much more. The program is designed to lead them into size, shape, and color discrimination which automatically leads them into visually recognizing letters and numbers. Hand and eye coordination is also improved through pouring, spooning and working with all types of kitchen and other tools. Art is also a very important part of your child’s experience. Cutting scrapes of paper is not trash to your child; it is hard work and needs to be recognized. Holding a marker or crayon like a pencil begins to help them work towards handwriting. Art is helpful with their social skills and can reflect emotions also. Each child is different and it all depends on them when the sensitive periods for learning will appear. The teachers here at Great Mystery Montessori are trained to spot those periods and take your child to their next level of learning and becoming the adult they are meant to be.
Kindergarten and First Grade Program
During this age of development a child becomes aware of more than just their immediate surroundings such as family and friends. They will begin to see the world and all of its many gifts along with some of the obstacles in life as well. They will begin to hear the news and ask questions, they will see the handicapped and the differences in people, ages, lifestyles and begin to ask questions in regards to how they fit in this world. It is an exciting time for their growth.
Our kindergarten first grade program will first and foremost take the child’s questions and help them to organize the information to assist them in seeing their gifts and how they fit into the world as it is and how they could make a difference in the world as they grow. The program is designed to help the child adapt to their new thoughts socially, emotionally, physically, and academically.
The program will consist of in-depth lessons on geography which will bring in the different cultures of society which leads right in to the history of our world. They will begin to study countries and flags on all the continents along with the states and capitals of this country. Botany and Zoology will also become a much more detailed program for this age group, with lots of hands on experiments in science, because now the child can understand some concepts that were a bit too difficult to comprehend prior to this stage of development. Math and language will become much more detailed with each child, they will begin learning not only to read and spell more accurately, they will be introduced to the English grammar rules, sentence structure, and reading comprehension will also become a larger part of the reading program. Math will take on new meaning for them as they expand on addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. Fractions, measure, and time will now become concepts they will begin to understand.
